AMSilk Co-Founder Thomas Scheibel Named Finalist for European Inventor Award

AMSilk GmbH, the world’s first industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers, is proud to announce that its co-founder, Prof. Thomas Scheibel, has been named a finalist in the SME Sector of the European Patent Office’s 2018 “European Inventor Award” for his pioneering work to produce synthetic spider silk biopolymers.

To commercialize Prof. Scheibel’s science, in 2008 AMSilk was founded in Munich. AMSilk has been producing biopolymers on a large industrial scale since 2014 and has raised a double-digit million Euro in venture capital. Since then AMSilk’s silk biopolymers are based on the unique properties of Prof. Scheibel’s invention.

“It is a great honor to be named a finalist alongside other such impressive technologists,” said Prof. Scheibel. “With the silk biopolymers we’ve developed, we can make entire categories of consumer products both better performing and more sustainable.”

AMSilk now uses the synthetic silk biopolymer production technology, which employs engineered strains of bacteria in the production of high-performance silk biopolymers, for applications in the fields of medical technology, personal care products, industrial applications and textiles.

European Inventor Award finalists are selected by EPO experts and an independent international jury that evaluate innovations based on technological originality and economic and social impact.
